SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What's the Difference and What Should You Focus On?
Search used to mean ten blue links on Google. Today, people get answers from featured snippets, voice assistants, and AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. That shift has produced three acronyms — SEO, AEO and GEO — and a lot of confusion about which one matters.
SEO: Search Engine Optimization
SEO is the work of making your pages discoverable, crawlable and worth ranking in traditional search results. It covers technical health, content quality, internal linking and earning links from other sites. It is still the foundation: most AI systems lean on the same web index and the same quality signals.
AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
AEO focuses on being the answer — the featured snippet, the "People also ask" result, the voice-assistant response. It rewards content that answers a specific question clearly and early, with structure a machine can lift out: direct definitions, short steps, tables and well-marked FAQs.
GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
GEO is about being mentioned and cited when an AI model writes an answer. The model isn't picking one page to rank; it's synthesizing from many sources. What helps is being a clear, trustworthy, frequently referenced source on your topic — consistent brand facts, original data or expertise, and presence on the sites those models draw from.
One strategy, three surfaces
- SEO gets you into the index and earns trust.
- AEO shapes your content so it can be extracted as an answer.
- GEO makes your brand the source AI tools choose to cite.
Treating them as separate projects usually wastes effort. The practical approach is to build a strong SEO base, write content that answers real questions directly, and then track where your brand shows up (or doesn't) in AI answers — and close those gaps.
Start with the fundamentals, measure AI visibility, then prioritize. Clarity beats chasing every new acronym.
